These days online is everything. Although I specialize in print design, I do a lot of my work remotely online. One of the easiest ways I have found to get new clients is through a website called Upwork. It’s been a great place to grow my client base.
As with anything though, you get back what you put into it, and it does take some effort to get into the game. It very much is a game of selling yourself. I was a little leery at first, but being a designer, that is what you’re essentially doing when you take on a new client. To even get to that point, you need to sell yourself, and what you can do. Freelance work can definitely be a full-time job, with everything that goes into getting yourself out there. Advertising, branding and messaging are all important when it comes to the right clients being able to find you.
That is what I like about UpWork. I have been on this platform for about 3 years now. I really enjoy the fact that I can refuse work if I don’t find it fits my skill set or my interests. I can seek out jobs that will further my real-world education and that I can have fun working on. Which is exactly what I want, considering I do this freelance work in my spare time. I also love the fact that I have found some amazing clients that have stuck with me through the years. It’s nice having clients that think of me when they have design needs.

It’s been a great tool for continuing and growing my freelance business. It’s incredibly flexible. This past summer I took on a large book project that took up most of my free time. I was able to put Upwork on the back burner, after completing in-progress work of course, so I could focus on the book.
I just recently decided it was time to take on more Upwork jobs. I was a bit worried, as this was my first time taking a hiatus on the platform and I wasn’t sure how hard it was to going to be to get back on the wagon and get project work again. After a little updating to my profile and sending out some touch base messages, everything has gone back to normal.
Now I know that this isn’t the case for some, as I have read that quite a few people have had negative experiences with the platform. I can say myself included, as it did go through a period where it was more DownWork than UpWork. They have since corrected those issues it seems, as the whole system is working more smoother now with hardly any downtime. But there are people who also have issues with the how the system works for payment and in getting projects. But like I said earlier, getting the work is all a matter of how much time and effort you put into it. For me, it has been a great system for finding work to fill in the gaps of my spare time.
